Adult orthodontics straightens teeth and corrects bites for grown-ups, using braces or Invisalign clear aligners.

What Is Adult Orthodontics?

Adult orthodontics is straightening your teeth and correcting bite problems after your teenage years. It covers crowding, gaps, and bite issues like an overbite, underbite, or crossbite, treated with braces or Invisalign clear aligners.

If you feel late to this, you’re in good company. About one in three orthodontic patients today is an adult, according to the American Association of Orthodontists.

The real difference with adults isn’t whether teeth can move. It’s what we check before starting. Grown-up mouths can carry older fillings, crowns, or a history of gum issues, so we look at the whole picture first and plan treatment around what’s already there.

Why Choose an Orthodontic Specialist for Adult Treatment?

Dr. Jonathan Petrover, orthodontic specialist

Choosing an orthodontist as an adult comes down to one question: who is actually planning and running your treatment? At Petrover Orthodontics, that person is Dr. Jonathan Petrover, an orthodontic specialist for more than 20 years. He treats adults across both our offices, so the specialist you meet at your consultation is the one who follows your case to the end.

Orthodontics is all we do. Dr. Petrover is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Southern Association of Orthodontists, the South Florida Academy of Orthodontists, and the Florida Association of Orthodontists. He also completes 12 to 18 continuing-education courses every year, so the way we treat adult teeth keeps pace with how the field moves.

We’ve helped thousands of patients, and we know adult teeth behave differently from a teenager’s.

For some adults, the worry isn’t really about the teeth. It’s about walking into a meeting with a mouth full of metal.

  • Discreet options for image-conscious adults, including public-facing professionals. Clear ceramic braces and Invisalign keep treatment low-key while you work.
  • Every option under one specialist. We fit both braces and Invisalign and recommend the right one after we see your bite.
  • Digital scans instead of putty. No goop or gagging, and it feeds straight into your plan.
  • Flexible monthly payment plans with a down payment, and we accept most insurance and file it for you.
  • Same-day emergency care whenever possible for a broken bracket, a poking wire, or a lost aligner, so a small problem doesn’t derail your week.
  • Two convenient offices, in Wellington and Boynton Beach.

Dr. Petrover talks you through what he finds, lays out the choices that fit your case, and lets you decide at your own pace.

Braces and Invisalign Options for Adults

Most adults have more than one good option, and the right one depends on your case, your job, and how visible you’re comfortable being. We fit all four of the options below.

Option How visible Who it tends to suit
Metal braces Most visible A wide range of cases, from simple to more complex
Ceramic (clear) braces Tooth-colored and low-visibility Adults who’d rather braces stayed low-key at work
In-Ovation self-ligating braces Braces-style, fixed to the teeth Adults who want a fixed braces option
Invisalign clear aligners Removable and discreet Adults who want the least noticeable option and can wear them consistently

Ceramic braces and Invisalign are two popular options for adults who’d rather treatment wasn’t obvious. Invisalign aligners are clear and removable, so you take them out to eat and to brush, and most people won’t notice them day to day.

There isn’t a single option that’s best for everyone. You can compare metal, ceramic and Invisalign options in more detail before you come in.

Invisalign vs Braces for Adults: Which Is Better?

The honest answer is that the right choice depends on your bite and your routine, not on one option being better than the other. Braces and Invisalign both move teeth with steady, gentle pressure; they just suit different cases.

Invisalign appeals to image-conscious adults, but results depend on wearing the aligners close to full-time, so it suits some routines better than others.

Braces stay fixed to your teeth and suit a wide range of cases, with no daily wear-time to remember. Ceramic braces keep them low-visibility when discretion is the concern. You can read more about Invisalign, and at your consultation we’ll tell you which choices make sense for your case, and which don’t.

How Does Adult Orthodontic Treatment Work?

Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. Braces use mild, constant pressure to move your teeth into their proper positions over time, as the Cleveland Clinic explains, and clear aligners work on the same idea. Adult treatment can need more planning or take longer than a teenager’s.

  1. Full exam
  2. Digital x-rays
  3. Your plan and cost

Your first visit is the free consultation. It includes a full exam, digital x-rays and a braces consultation, and if impressions are needed, we take them with a digital scanner rather than putty. From there, Dr. Petrover builds a plan specific to your teeth and walks you through exactly what it involves and what it costs.

Once treatment starts, you’ll come in for regular check-ins so we can track how your teeth are moving and make small adjustments along the way. When your teeth are where they should be, you move into retainers to hold the result.

How Long Does Adult Orthodontic Treatment Take?

How long treatment takes depends on your case. For braces, treatment usually takes about 18 to 24 months, though it will vary with your case. Minor spacing or mild crowding usually moves faster than a bite that needs bigger changes. The option you choose and how consistently you stick with it matter too, especially with aligners that need close to full-time wear. For a stage-by-stage look, see how long braces take for adults.

Dr. Petrover gives you a realistic time estimate at your consultation, once he’s seen your teeth and your x-rays. Keeping your appointments helps treatment stay on schedule. A broken bracket or an appliance damaged by sticky, hard, or chewy food usually means an extra visit, which can add time, so we’ll show you what to avoid.

Are You Ever Too Old for Braces or Invisalign?

“Am I too old for this?” is a common question for adults, whether they’re 25 or 65. Age alone isn’t the deciding factor; what matters more is the health of your teeth and gums.

Healthy teeth can move at any age, and we treat patients from kids all the way to their 70s.

Adult orthodontics helps with a few common situations:

  • Crowded or crooked teeth that are hard to clean
  • Gaps you’d like to close
  • A bite problem such as an overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Teeth that have shifted since you had braces years ago

The one thing we can’t do is confirm you’re a candidate from a web page. Some adults have gum or bone concerns that need attention first, and an in-person exam is the only way to know for sure. That’s what the consultation is for, so you leave knowing where you stand.

How Much Does Adult Orthodontic Treatment Cost?

Adult treatment doesn’t have a single price, because it depends on your case, the option you choose, and how long you’re in treatment. That’s why we don’t give a single price online, only the monthly examples on our cost page. We quote your own fee after we’ve seen your teeth.

What we can tell you upfront is how we make it manageable. Your treatment fee includes everything: diagnostic records, appliances, retainers, and follow-up visits. We also offer flexible monthly payment plans with a down payment, so the cost is spread out rather than due all at once.

Insurance may help too. We accept most insurance and file the claims for you, including plans from Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Assurant, Guardian, MetLife, Humana, Delta Dental, and Solstice. Combining insurance with a payment plan can make treatment easier to afford. Florida Medicaid’s orthodontic coverage is for recipients under 21 when treatment is medically necessary, so if you have Medicaid as an adult, check with your Medicaid dental plan.

Your consultation includes a full breakdown of costs for your plan, so you’ll know the real number before you decide anything. You can also read more about our cost of treatment and payment plans and the insurance we accept.

Frequently asked questions

Can you still get Invisalign as an adult?
For many adults, yes, and Invisalign is a common choice. The aligners are clear and removable, so they stay discreet at work and you take them out to eat and brush. Results depend on wearing them consistently, close to full-time each day. Dr. Petrover has treated many Invisalign patients, and we fit aligners for adults at both offices.
Will insurance pay for braces for adults?
It depends on your plan. Some dental plans include orthodontic benefits for adults, but many limit them to children, so it’s worth checking your plan’s orthodontic benefit. We accept most insurance and file it for you, including Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Assurant, Guardian, MetLife, Humana, Delta Dental, and Solstice. See the insurance we accept for details.
Will FL Medicaid pay for braces?
Florida Medicaid covers orthodontic treatment for recipients under 21 when it’s medically necessary, usually for a severe bite problem, and it needs prior authorization. Orthodontics isn’t on its dental list for adults 21 and over, so if you’re an adult with Medicaid, your Medicaid dental plan can tell you what it covers.
How to get braces cheaper as an adult?
Use any orthodontic benefit your plan has, and ask about pay-in-full savings; HSA/FSA dollars can be used too. A monthly payment plan then spreads what’s left, and your free consultation includes a full cost breakdown.
Is it worth getting braces as an adult?
It can be. For some adults, correcting crowding, gaps or a bite problem makes teeth easier to keep clean and helps how they bite and chew, and many simply feel more confident. Whether it’s worth it for you depends on your goals, and a consultation confirms what treatment can realistically achieve.
